Incorrect Sex Requests
This instruction will help you evaluate and handle incorrect sex requests.
First, look for proof of sex in Family Tree. Then, open DMConsole.
- If there is a membership record, click the CRN.
- If the sex on the membership record is the same as the sex on the record in tree, continue to the Issues with Specific Ordinance Dates section.
- If the sex on the membership record is different than the sex on the record in tree, follow the instructions in the Incorrect Sex Membership instruction.
- If there is not a membership record and there are no ordinances, view the Handling Issues with a Red Admin Label and No Ordinances Were Completed with an Incorrect Sex Proxy section.
Specific Ordinance Dates Issues
Open the ordinances page. In the person column, for each CTR ID and look for the blue square (male) or pink circle (female) reflecting for which sex the ordinance was performed.
- If there are ordinances done with the incorrect sex pre–1970, follow the instructions in the Incorrect Sex Pre–1970 instruction.
- If pre–1970 and post–1970 ordinances exist, follow the Incorrect Sex Pre–1970 instructions and the Incorrect Sex Post–1970 instruction.
Red Admin Labels and No Ordinance Dates Completed with Incorrect Sex Proxy Issues

Incorrect Sex Pre-1970 Issues
Before working on a Pre-1970 Incorrect Sex issue, verify that it is NOT a Membership issue before proceeding.
Pre-1970 List View
Use this instruction following the Incorrect Sex—Membership instruction if proxy ordinances were performed before 1970. These cases are treated differently because, before 1970, some ordinances were recorded without sex designation. When pre-1970 ordinances were loaded into ODM database, the program approximated the sex of the record. Therefore, the sex of the proxy must be verified by looking at the original record on temple film.
Verify the correct sex by looking for proof in Family Tree. Proof may be found in sources for birth, death, or marriages. If you cannot easily verify the sex, ask the guest to provide proof.
Research Ordinances
- Search using the PID in DMConsole.
- Click the Ordinances tab.
- In the CTR ID column, click the CTR number for the incorrect sex ordinance.
- Copy the ODM Number, found under the Principal section, middle column, next to Source System ID. Do not copy the alpha characters.
- Open ODM search in DMConsole.
- Click ODM Records as the dataset.
- Paste the ODM number in the Name ID box.
- Click Search.
- Scroll down the page to view the search results.
- Make sure the ordinances filter is highlighted blue.
- Find the ordinance you are looking for and find the film number and, if listed, the page and ordinance numbers.
Fix Ordinances
- First check the catalog for the film number. If you do not find the number in the catalog, open Image Viewer and search the film for the record of that ordinance. See the instruction for Image Viewer.
- When you find the temple record, look at the name of the proxy for the individual. If you are unsure of the sex of the proxy, look at other temple records before and after your record to see if the same proxy stood in for other individuals that day. The proxy would have stood in for all male or all female individuals.
- Determine if the ordinance in question is primary or secondary. Is the recorded ordinance a primary ordinance? Or is the recorded ordinance secondary and being referenced as a previously completed ordinance? For example, a baptism referenced on an endowment or an endowment on a sealing would be secondary.
Using the CTR Changes with Incorrect Sex table, determine whether the ordinance that was completed by the incorrect sex proxy needs to be invalidated.

Before moving forward, verify the correct sex by looking for proof in Family Tree by looking at attached sources, such as birth or death records or marriage records. If you cannot easily verify the sex, email the guest and ask them to provide proof.
Verify that all CTRs were intended for that individual using name, dates, relationships, locality, etc., given in the CTR. If any ordinances are for a different individual, use the Ordinance Workflow document.

Incorrect Sex Membership Issues
